Re: Transports - Sonic Frontier SFT1 vs. Sony DVP 7000es

Sorry for the confusion, Larry.

The quote you've cited refers to my recently modded Pioneer Elite PD-65. I am not comparing the transport to my DAC in the strict sense. I meant to say that Mr. Nugent's mods have raised the performance level of my transport to parity with the performance level of my AN DAC. Stated another way, my formerly "mid-fi" transport is now a "hi-end" unit. It was evident with the very first cd I spun after putting the modded transport back into my rig how much of my DAC's potential had been previously untapped. Startlingly improved coherence, focus and "air" down to the bottom end (30Hz w/my speakers). The difference was FAR from subtle. I've gone through enough upgrades in building my system (details available on this site) to know when a change is significant (for me, many haven't been). The PD-65 together with the mods set me back over $4000 less than my AN DAC, hence my comment on relative cost. I meant to convey the message that achieving parity in transport versus DAC performance doesn't require equivalent cost.

FWIW, when I took the plunge for the AN DAC 4.1x Sig a while back, I faced the question mr. bill has, in part, raised: "Is my current transport able to get the most from a very good DAC?" I considered whether I "needed" to swap my humble Pioneer for a CEC, Mephisto, Levinson (etc) transport at a cost of up to $2500-5000. I now know I didn't have to.

I note an SFT-1 transport on Audiogon being offered for $995. I just thought that mr. bill might also consider the Empirical Audio mods for half that cost. $500 saved can buy a lot of cds, make a nice start toward a better amp, etc.

I have absolutely no affiliation with Steve Nugent or Empirical Audio.

I am simply an extremely satisfied and grateful customer. The results in my rig tell me that Steve CLEARLY knows how to cost-effectively engineer hi-end digital into the stock units he mods. He's a real gentleman as well, and was very generous with his time both by phone and email.
