I agree 100% with you that those Sony a beautiful made, built like a tank transports.
But the problem with the Sony's of that generation is they have two clocks: 45.1584MHz and 16.9344 MHz, the latter being synchronized to the former by a CMOS oscillator and a three leaded crystal.
So replacement of the 45.1584 MHz clock will not bring the maximum soundquality as the CMOS oscillator baddens the clock.
A possibility is to only replace the 16.9344 MHz clock and use the Sony only as a transport. (the DAC inside is bullshit anyway).
Only the German firm Swoboda seems to have solved the clock-problem as they are offering a board replacing both clocks.
Most modders are simply offering a 45.1584 MHz clock and keep silent about the 16.9344 MHz clock.
As a sidenote I find the sound of a old swingarm Philips CD-650 better than the sound coming from a Sony CDPX-33ES. (Both with the same KWAK-CLOCK)
