...none of your other components, have a Laser Pick Up built in. When the first CD players were introduced, they were heavy duty, with Aluminum cast rock solid mechanisms and VERY reliable Optical Laser Pick Up devices. From what I know, the last reliable Laser Pick ups were built about 7-10 years ago, ever since ALL manufacturers Philips, Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Sharp, JVC, Toshiba and Sanyo are trying to cut cost and started the "new era" of cheap Laser Pick ups. So we have ended up with this "high reliabilty". The other thing is that the above mentioned companies are THE ONLY CD/DVD transport/laser pick up manufacturers in the World and everyhing else spins around them. It has been always funny to me when people are talking about CD Transports and Players costing thousands of $$ knowing the fact that most of these products have less than $20 cost CD/DVD transport inside, something you will find in the cheapest "boombox".The moral of the story is: Find your self a CDP-X707ES or CDP-X779ES by Sony and you will have one of THE BEST possible CD transports ever. You can find it for around $500. If you know about the good rock solid Accuphase DP-75 it has EXACTLY the same CD mechanism inside. Of course, you can buy DP-75 for about 10 times more...:-) The only thing needed to be done with the above Sony models is to add a Precision Clock oscillator and disconnect the DAC/Analog Stages.
If you will ask me about current DVD based transports, I will be really hard pressed to come up with recommendation. The best so far was the Dual Pick up in Sony SCD-1 and SCD-777ES (which are the same except the Gold Plate and the Transformers) Next, I think comes Toshiba and Philips - very cleverly designed.
Enjoy the music!
Alex
