Thinking of getting an ART DI/O to try out. What do I need to know?

I know the ART DI/O has taken the world by storm (at this this small world) over the past several months and am thinking of giving it a try. I know many here have come up with a number of tweaks to boost the performance of the ART DI/O, but I don't want it to get too complicated. Thus, I am really looking for the basics. Here are a few specific questions I have:

1) Why do people remove the tube? My understanding is that the ART DI/O has a tube. Why do people remove it and how can it work without it? What is gained by removing the tube?

2) I assume I need to use the ART DI/O with a CD player that has a coaxial digital output. Is this true?

3) For connecting the ART DI/O to my integrated amp, I have read that a standard pair of RCA cables does not work. Is it true that the ART DI/O does not have RCA outputs (left and right)? So, do I need one of those cables that has a stereo mini plug on end and left and right RCA cables on the other end? Many companies offer these. I think Monster does. In any event, what exact type of cable do I need to connect the ART DI/O to my integrated amp?

4) What sampling rate setting should I choose? The ART DI/O doesn't upsample, does it? I doubt that it does. So, for connecting the ART DI/O to a CD player, shouldn't I choose the 44.1 kHz setting? I have heard of people observing distortion at other settings (maybe 96 kHz).

5) Where should the input gain be set? How is this parameter used?

6) Where should the tube warmth be set? This is assuming I leave the tube in. If the tube is removed, I assume that this dial need not be adjusted. Let's assume for now that I leave the tube in so that I can learn how to adjust the tube warmth paramter.

7) What type of tube does the ART DI/O use? Is a replacement tube readily available if I ever needed one?

Is there anything else I should know without complicating the matter? I am looking at the ART DI/O as an inexpensive and simple tweak to add to either of my systems. I have two stereo systems, and frankly, I am not sure where I would try the ART DI/O first. The nice thing about the ART DI/O is that it is small and presumably easy to hook up, so I could try it with various CD players. It could be fun to try the ART DI/O out with various transports.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
