Before I start: I did a blind A/B ON the wife yesterday and she preferred the MSB 5 out-of 5 times! (Truth!)I've had the "Full Nelson" for 4 FULL days now. I've had different CD's looping 24/7 for the time I wasn't actually listening to it.
I A/B'd this thing several hours yesterday and made a few observations that I would like some feedback. (IE: Do I keep it?)
BASICS: Denon AVR 5700, Mirage OM-8's, Yamaha CDP 765
1) When listening to my Yamaha 765 CDP, straight analogue:
The Soundstage is smaller, but it seems to be "coming from/centered at" the middle-point of the speakers, vertically. The two speakers sound more “independent†of each other, than when running thru the MSB.
2) When running "optically" into the MSB, then analogue out:
The soundstage seems to be fuller, (IE: more invisibility to the speakers) BUT the Vertical "Center" rises to the "top" almost above my speakers. I can almost swear that I hear more "hiss" from the tweeters at harder driven volumes. This leads to wonder if the ...
I hope you can understand my question ...
... If the DAC is raising the frequency on the musical mix, so as to raise the true-midrange's into the tweeter frequencies range more? Is this possible? (anything, is possible) Is this a good thing? (prob not) Won't it cause more use/abuse of the tweeters? Would this be considered "correct"? More modern recordings sound more effortless and the vocals seem to be emanating from 1 speaker not 2. Although the "frequency shift" I mentioned comes to mind and I worry. IS THIS JUST SENSLESS PARANOIA? Am I being over analytical?
I would really enjoy some feedback from people who currently are using this unit, or those who have sent them back for similar/other reasons.
Thanks for your time. I tried to be as clear as possible but feel free to ask questions if you think it will help.
