...just fit a Meridian 518 inbetween this and your Transport. Comprehensive remote control for volume, de-jittering, emphasis/de-emph, gain, word matching.....amazing bag of tricks. I have an Audio Note DAC 3.1 with tube output stage feeding mono-block Michell Alectos and am very happy. A test I tried was to remove the Meridian altogether and play a disc which has been recorded at a very low level, meaning it played at a bearable level but with no volume control. The Meridian hardly affected the sound at all, merely refining it ever so slightly, but bass was virtually unaffected. However, I`d suggest that putting a pre-amp and IC in circuit definately would detract in absolute resolution, and I don`t use speaker-cable either which adds to the attraction. Get the Meridian secon-hand and you can swap DACs whenever you like, still retaining the direct to amp option.
