Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

"Now, this system consisted of CD quality tracks being played on a pc via a USB cable into a Mytek DAC, and then into a tube pre-amp, and then into mono tube power amps. I've never heard anything that sounded this good before."

Why don't you just forget the OPPO the receiver and do what you heard playing (with mono or stereo power amps)? Give the stuff you have to your kids (or other family member).

There are some very inexpensive USB DACS that sound very good. Look at IFI products to start. You can upgrade later if you need to. Get a refurbished MAC + external hard drive + DVD/CD drive (if the MAC doesn't have one) and you'll be good to go. Audivirana is a good MAC-compatible music player program that plays with or without Itunes, as a starter. It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but it's a good place to start.

Screw streamers and beamers to start with, unless you are already a streamer-beamer. (I am not). Then you'll need a music server instead of the MAC and USB Dac The crew you are talking with knows all about these.
