Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: New to DACs here...for better sound, get better CD player, or get a DAC for current player?

Should I get a better source device, such as an Oppo 105, and use the analog outputs? Or, should I get a quality DAC and use my current Oppo as a transport?

My vote would be for the latter option. It will also facilitate the time if you should move to a server / streamer based solution in the future - that's what I use.

While most of the discussions seem to surround the particular DAC chips used, I find that the analog output stage to be more important in determining the final audio quality. You can have the best conversion, but if it is amplified by a ho-hum analog stage using run-of-the-mill op amps and a basic power supply, then the results will not be optimum.

What's true for preamplifier quality holds true here as well. I prefer units with beefy and isolated power supplies for the analog and digital sections, use of discrete zero feedback output devices and galvanic isolation from the transport source.
