Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

New to DACs here...for better sound, get better CD player, or get a DAC for current player?

Currently using an Oppo BDP-83 universal disc player, via HDMI into my Denon receiver. It sounds okay, but I recently heard a two channel system that just blew me away. Now, this system consisted of CD quality tracks being played on a pc via a USB cable into a Mytek DAC, and then into a tube pre-amp, and then into mono tube power amps. I've never heard anything that sounded this good before.

I'm assuming that, in order to approach that quality, it will mean ditching the HDMI connection to pretty much any receiver or AV processor. Would I be correct?

To get better CD/SACD/DVD-Audio sound quality, what would be a first step? Should I get a better source device, such as an Oppo 105, and use the analog outputs? Or, should I get a quality DAC and use my current Oppo as a transport? And, if so, what is the best connection from the Oppo to a DAC? Thanks for any tips/info.
