Mark Levinson No. 37 Disc Drive

I've lived with three different samples of the Mark Levinson No, 37. Go to my homepage, and search for the many posts I've dedicated to this model.

Yes, my colleagues and I have encountered quirks and problems with the disc drives. On one unit, it would read the TOC maybe half the time, and then, it stopped playing all together. We had to ship the unit (we still had the original box and transport screw) down to an authorized SoCal repair shop. I think the cost of a new drive was $1400. So be prepared for sticke shock, if your unit does need a new drive.

Even new drives can be idiosyncratic. They sometimes fail to initialize the TOC. They sometimes forget the time mode. In these cases, you'll have to turn off the unit, then power it back up.

As I've covered in my posts, you can kick the performance of the No. 37 up several notches, by (a) substituting after-market fuses, and (b) finding a copacetic powercord. The stock unit already boasts top-notch sound. Implementing (a) and (b) makes the No. 37 state-of-the-art. This unit really does, on a sonic basis, show how superior good ol' Redbook CD can be.
