So smart phones on a smart phone.......if they can figure a way to make more money theyll do it. Audio quality is secondary.Apple has been outputting digital audio for a while now via their Lightning connector on iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches. So I wouldn't say that audio quality is secondary.
As an example, in my case I use either my iPhone or iPod Touch in the car and it connects to the car audio system 'digitally' via the Lightning connector on the iDevice to an enhanced USB port under the center armrest. I say 'enhanced USB' because it is setup for 'iPhone integration' unlike the other USB ports in the car. iPhone or iPod Touch digital audio is sent to the car's audio system DAC directly while completely bypassing the (less than stellar) analog output from the iDevice. Album art, play lists, etc are additionally sent to the car's navigation system LCD screen. No 3.5mm analog connection required.
One of the reasons for eliminating the 3.5mm jack is due to physical size. By today's standards on smartphones, it's rather large both in diameter and depth.... precious space in thin smartphones.
There was talk earlier that Apple would eliminate the 3.5mm jack and just output digital audio strictly through the Lightning connector. There are already headphones on the market that have built-in DAC chips and get power from the iPhone Lightning connector.
Now that the tiny thin USB-C port is out, perhaps Apple will use USB-C on iDevices in the future instead of the Lightning port. Not sure which way they will go on that front. Apple was first to adopt USB-C in a laptop last year - in the ultra-thin MacBook.
