Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Slightly off topic but possibly relevant RANT

I'm not a big TV guy, but for Christmas a couple months ago I got a shiny new Panasonic HD flatscreen. Looks great but out of the box it sounds like a bad transistor car radio from the 70s. My first thought was "OK, I can hook up a pair of active monitors and bypass the audio", but oops, no analogue audio output, not even a crappy 1/8" headphone jack. The only audio outputs are Toslink and HDMI (in 2016 ??). So I rummaged around and found a little tripath amp with Toslink input and a pair of mid-fi bookshelves, thinking I could use the tinny TV speakers as a center channel and at least get to a listenable level. Imagine my surprise to find that the digital audio outputs are not coordinated with the native TV audio. Meaning that the internal speaker is out of alignment, and the stock volume control is useless for external output. I'm not trying to sound whiny here, but what kind of numbskull engineer made that counterintuitive decision? When I turn down the volume on the TV, I expect the sound level to drop no matter what the output source is. And there's no explanation or disclaimer anywhere in the Owner's manual about this, as if it is common knowledge. Of course the workaround is to invest in a processor and a universal remote. Or maybe one of those ugly looking soundbar things: who knows how they work or sound. But why does it have to be so complicated? It just seems illogical.

. . . in theory, practice and theory are the same; in practice, they are different . . .
