Inmate "Thorsten" made an interesting budget recommendation not too long ago: Pioneer DV-505. It's a vintage "memory player". Can be found on ebay for about $50 shipped.
Thorsten recommends a few mods for the DV-505, of course, but the final cost should be relatively low. Do a search on this forum and find out more.
