It should be rather an easy task to determine whether it is the output caps. Simply desolder and remove the current caps., and then solder a different pair of caps. having a similar capacitance and the same or greater voltage rating in to the circuit. Make certain that the caps. are fully discharged before attempting to remove them or you may get a nasty shock.

While I've not heard the AN DACs, I do have extensive listening experience with a non-oversampling DAC of my own design wich allowed me to activate and deactivate the digital filter on-the-fly. I would describe the general character of the soundstage and imaging as rather narrow but very deep, when compared to the sound with the digital filter active. So, I doubt that the oversized images you report are due to the non-oversampling operating mode.
