One of the main benefits of the FPGA is that it allows the designer to code and reprogram logic internal to the FPGA and easily make changes to his design w/o the expense of committing his design to a 'hard coded' ASIC which costs a fortune to have manufactured with a long lead time. In addition to basic gates and reconfigurable interconnects, FPGAs also come with some Logic Elements offering various "pre-built" functions like DSP, memory blocks, protocol converters, etc.
CPLDs are typically used for smaller designs, while FPGAs are for larger designs.
