It seems like the "listenability" aspect of digital audio has always been disregarded by designers, yet they've been baffled over why these technologies haven't taken off. For even non-audiophiles aren't impressed. In spite of lower resolutions, mainstreamers most prefer MP3 of all digital formats.
At least since the 1990's rise of the SET countercurrent, there is a palpable sense for many people that the engineering methods and frames of reference ALONE do not guarantee musical reproduction's appeal. That engineering mentality dominates the digital.
