Often, good designs using these types of DAC chips will offer you the sonic signature you are after. Better designs using R2R will retain a lot of that mid-bass expressiveness, and offer a hugely stable and dynamic presentation to it. Fabulous to hear.
I'd recommend what I use, of course, but there are some excellent alternatives. You could then attach an off-board USB adapter. However, the pipeline of NOS R2R DACs is drying up fast. Whatever is in the retail pipeline (Lite Audio, Audio-gd) may be all that is left of the breed.
