there would be some variables perhaps but cant you pipe it through your CD system? DACs I imagine would end up different unless you use a DAC in an amp setup. Most devices that play compressed files have their own DAC and analog out

But I did the "tests" online just using my laptop and Grado headphones where I guess all else is equal (and rather crappy) - where they line up the same files in different resolutions. Again doesnt guarantee the removal of all variables but I am just saying the differences were not as crystal clear as I assumed they would have been. I would stand by the notion that mastering, and production transfer issues far outweigh resolution differences for MOST recordings - again this isnt empirical as much as to say those things often suck in real world
