I buy CDs for music I like and if it's a terrific recording, that's a bonus.
As far as improving the sound quality of CDs, there a couple of things you can do (there are a lot of threads on Tweeks about this).
I use Optrix to treat my CDs. L'Art du Son is probably better but more expensive. There are many others.
Then on top of the CD I use Nordost Eco anti-static spray.
I also use a Bedini Clarifier although the Furtech is the latest.
These won't turn a badly recorded and compressed CD into a state-of-the-art recording but they will improve the clarity, separation of the instruments and dynamic range noticeably.
