It's a well-known problem. Not just the remotes, but the older black Squeezebox and Squeezebox2 had the same coating that deteriorates over time.
It's not just Squeezeboxes, either. I had a Hercules guitar stand that suffered the same thing on a couple of its pieces. The manufacturer sent me a warranty replacement for that one.
The coating can be removed with some isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and a bit of elbow grease. If you soak it in the alcohol it will soften further and much of it can be scraped off with a fingernail or similar. The rest can be wiped off with a cloth.
