Our main TV is a Sony Bravia in the family room. Like many other Sony's they still provide an analog audio output. In our case, it's just a 3.5mm mini stereo jack behind the TV. There are benefits to this which we've used in the past.
For example, when we had our ZEVOX soundbar hooked up to the TV, we used the analog output from the Sony to drive the soundbar. The benefit in this case was that we could use the Sony remote (or the programmed cable box remote) to adjust the Volume output w/o having to use the ZEVOX remote. One less remote to deal with.
In the present setup we're using the optical output from the Sony TV to drive a cheapie DAC behind the Marantz integrated amp. In this case we are forced to use the Marantz remote and the cable box remote.
So on the Sony we do get output from TOSLINK Optical as well as the analog 3.5mm jack even though our sources come into the TV via HDMI.
