Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: what is the better "bang for the Buck" upgrade: better transport or reclocker?

It all depends on what your long term goal is and how much money you are prepared to sink into the equipment for a gain in performance.

Depending on the size of your disc collection, could you see yourself ripping them all to a server?
My personal suggestion is to consider moving towards a solution that enables network streaming of (lossless) digital files (assuming you are prepared to rip your optical media!). You will notice that standalone CD players are becoming thin on the ground although transports have made a comeback. However, the writing is on the wall for optical media.

Your DAC has an asynchronous USB input and you may find that using a laptop/USB input to your DAC gets you a better result without the additional cost of a new transport or reclocker. The only cost to you would be the cost of your time to rip the CDs using a program like ExactAudioCopy and ripping the files to a lossless format like FLAC.

If you still prefer to spin discs, then certainly a single box solution can be better than splitting between 2 boxes given the introduction of jitter at the tx/rx interface and the transmission line. However you lose the flexibility to upgrade.
What makes a good transport is not just having a physical transport module with good error correction and low jitter feeding the transmitter. The other requirement is a low jitter output from the transmitter; the best will reclock the output data using the master clock and transmit via a transformer coupled output - preferably with a BNC and / or AES/EBU connection.

A proper Master Clock like the Big Ben will basically make your DAC performance independent of your source. This comes at a price (~USD1250 to USD1500). However, if you upgrade your DAC in future, you will still reap the reward and can also use it with any source - including your current DVD player which will sound more like a reference transport. Don't get caught in buying a cheap component that ends up having a limited usefulness as your system improves. The cheap reclockers are not the same quality - I have owned several over the years. They work well for the price and target audience but won't be giving you a reference grade performance compared to a proper Master Clock.
