Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: wise investment?

Based upon what I've experienced so far, I don't believe that all digital gear sounds the same. However, I have only used CD players for digital playback purposes (only about a dozen players so far) but I can honestly say that 20 dollar CD players sometimes sound every bit as good as players costing several thousand dollars. So, whether or not the differences I've heard in digital gear are significant enough to be considered real improvements is a question I'll continue to ask as well.

Our gold standard is the sound of live music, not the sound of gear. Probably one reason why I'll keep on looking for one piece of digital gear that clearly trumps every other piece when the goal is "the sound of music" rather than "good sound". I'm told that the cutting-edge digital playback gear of today does a better job of scrubbing out nasty digital artifacts during conversion than any of the old CD players ever did, and I'm looking forward to finding out if such technological advances matter all that much to my ears.
