I have an Oppo 95. I was using it via an Onkyo AV controller, an Audio Research pre amp, and a conrad johnson pre-amp. On a whim, I ran it directly into my tube monoblocks, using the digital controller in the Oppo for volume control. I immediately sold my pre-amps. It sounded a lot cleaner and more direct without the preamps, which sounded muffled by comparison. YMMV.
I move the cables to my phono pre-amp when I want to listen to vinyl. I have a surround system for sacd's, and for that, I use attenuators on the surround channels so that I can run the oppo DSD direct without doing a pcm conversion. It sounds slightly smoother that way, but the difference is subtle, if it's there at all.
