Depends what you call 12-14 Bit.
My first go at NOS used 4pcs of TDA1543 stacked, so that is typically -36dB @ -60dBFS or 96dB Dynamic range, so not terrible. Of course at 0dBFS we are looking at 13.5 Bit ENOB.
But despite audible shortcomings, this DAC had certain qualities that made me continue with the principle.

At 20 bits, you are on the verge of dynamic range covering fly-farts-at-20-feet to intolerable pain. Really, what more could we need?
