Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

A Successful Experiment

My daughter had an older Toshiba netbook that she wasn't using - one of those small sub-laptops that were popular before tablets - so I thought I'd try something. I installed Windows 7 (yes-it works!), 2GB of RAM and a 480GB SSD, and then copied over 300GB of FLAC and 320K MP3 files onto it. I have an AudioQuest Dragonfly 1.2 DAC running from the netbooks USB drive into my vintage Sumo Athena preamp, Hafler amp and Infinity IL-40 speakers.

When I got it all together and sat down to listen I was blown away by the sound. Detailed with a wide, deep soundstage, solid bass with a slightly warm lower midrange that brings male voices into the room. Highs are clean and clear and the imaging is rock solid.

Very pleased indeed!
