The error correction circuit is crucial for sound. All CD and other optical play back machines employ some form of error correction. These days the circuit is all enclosed on a single chip.
For audiophile purposes you will rarely hear skipping. That being said the more error correction is employed the more smeared the sound becomes. I use a bit of ferrofluid on the focus motors of the laser head. The ferrofluid certainly speeds up the reaction of the focus. without doing anything else to the machine, you hear significantly increased dynamics, and far greater detail, a clear indication that the while the error correction circuit was working, there was a pervasive "smear" to the sound.
You never hear about players reworking the correction circuit though.
