If you're looking for "cheap", I would not obsess over "balanced". At $100, Abe's idea ain't bad.

Since you broached the idea of replacing the amp, it sounds like your budget is somewhat flexible. Rather than replacing the amp, my personal recommendation would be what was recommended by another poster below -- get yourself an Oppo BDP-105. I use mine driving directly into my Ayre V-5x in my HT system, and I am *very* pleased with the sound. YMMV.
