Ok, after about 4 hours of listening and comparing to my Yamaha 5 CD Changer over the last three days, this is my preliminary report.
At first, I thought, oh-oh, the midrange is not good. It was muddy, and the highs seemed to be weak. I left the unit on, playing a CD for total of about 24 hours while I was at work over the last two days and had another chance to listen this morning.
I played some traditional jazz, a flute concerto, a clarinet concerto, a piano sonata and a CD by Melody Gardot.
I had to play the concertos several times each on each player and as I did so, the MHZS player began to shine. The differences which I thought at first were really subtle became more obvious after a couple of hours of back and forth.
I do not have golden ears, but the following became rather clear.
The MZHS player produced a deeper sound stage with the music sounding fuller. I don't know how else to say it. The sounds of cello, violin and piano were more organic as if I was hearing the wood of the instrument vibrating instead of just the strings. The is definitely more presence to everything. I also noticed that I found my self just listening to the music as I do with vinyl whereas with the Yamaha player I was always thinking I needed to put a record on.
I'm thinking things can only improve over the next 50-100 hours of listening.
I'll spend a lot more hours listening over the next week and report back. I just got a new QRP record from Jerome Sabbagh (Kickstarted Campaign)and I also have the CD, so I plan to do an A-B-C comparison, too.
