You are correct. Buy the way all CD players have a dac on board but you can use most cd players as a transport and hook them up to your dac. The laptop is not necessary as long as your main computer is in the same room as the rest of your system. As for a device to reduse jitter there are dozens of them. The current hot device is the ReGen from Uptone audio. It is just $175 and everybody says it improves the sound of digital audio
