Portable HIFI players

Hello. I travel/fly/drive a lot for work and stay in hotels across the country. Is there a portable HIFI player that is better than the IPOD ?
are in-ear or over the ear headphones better for sound? Just miss listening to music.
Any suggestions would be great. I look at a Sony Walkman for about 600 dollars and it seems decent.
Thoughts?
