A very technical curiosity - how to assess the quality of a spdif stream ?


Hi ! i have a big curiosity.
from day one i have read how important is the quality of a transport spdif output.
Is it difficult to assess the quality of a spdif out from a transport in a sure way ?
Because my impression is that most of the test are done by ear (???) mating the transport to a dac and listening to the couple.
Is this not possible with some instrument ?
That would be much more reliable i guess.
