Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Heck of a thrift store find

I was in a local Salvation Army, and was actually looking at a nice Akai reel to reel deck which a quick glance showed was marked $24.95. I was considering it until a better look revealed that it was actually $249.50! So much for that, but sitting right next to it was a Sony CDP X555es, priced at $14.95! I snapped it up at that price (even w/o the remote). I hooked it up and I have to say, I really like what I have heard so far. Works perfectly and, of course, built like a tank.

I have been using a Pioneer Elite DV45A SACD/CD player, and this is a huge upgrade over that on Redbook CDs. All of the instruments seem to have more texture and weight to them. First thing I put on was the Shostakovich Festive Overture from the Sheffield Labs Moscow Sessions set, and I was knocked out right from the start. The difference in the character of the sound of the trumpet was not small.

Not the highest end thing, I know, but a really nice upgrade for me for $14.95!
