Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

More work to do with "lampizating" my Kinergetics DAC

As I posted some time ago, I have a Kinergetics KCD-55 Ultra DAC that had the analog output stage blow up. Since I don't have a schematic and it is all discrete I decided that if the DACs were ok then I would buy a Lampizator tube output stage for the thing.

So, I have installed the tube output stage and found what I thought were good points to take the signal from the DAC board and everything looked ok with both channels on my digital oscilloscope when I sent 1Khz signal through.

The other day I hooked it up to the big rig and found that the right channel is working perfectly and sounds great but the left channel while working has some kind of high frequency distortion that is very edgy and unpleasant and suggests a problem somewhere in the chain.

So, now I have to go back and trouble shoot the tube output board to make sure it is not the analog output stage and if that is ok (I will swap the left and right channel inputs and see if the left channel is still distorted or if it moves to the right channel) then I have to see if there is something with the grounding on the DAC board or if I took the signal in the wrong place (perhaps after a damaged component from the blow out).

I am bummed because this DAC, even with the all SS output stage, sounded phenomenal and I expect it to sound even better (the right channel is very promising) when Lampizated.

I really love the sound that I get from these UltraAnalog 20 bit DAC modules, power, tone, resolution and bass...really top notch stuff.
