Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: Detail vs fatigue

Wise up everyone! Is it not clear by now that the favorite game for con artists in the audio community is DACS to make the inherently crappy CD format worth listening to? DAC'S are audio's latest diet fad, the best vitamin ever that will make you feel 20 years younger, a new moisturizer that will make your aging mug salvageable, or the latest and greatest male virility cure. And as evidenced by the review cited in this thread, PT Barnum was right on the money.

The red-book CD format is a dead horse at this point. CD has done it's thing. It introduced the world to digital sound and it changed the direction of audio. But now, it's time to move on.

It's really is tiresome to see yet another review claiming that 16/44 has been reinvented and now finally with this (fill in the blank) new revolutionary DAC we have a "game changer." Okay, I had to read the review out of morbid curiosity. 16/44 is done for and no mojo is going to make it into something that it is not, which is to say musical and a pleasure to listen to. Sorry to say for all of us that have invested so much into playback and media, but it's time to move on. If you really want to experience digital sound on another level how's about moving to the next level of resolution? Let go of your attachments to the old format.

The ultimate test of a format is that it is able to muster musical pleasure out of pretty much any device you play it on. As long as the device is working properly and is reasonably engineered, the user will find that the output is at least somewhat musical and do a reasonable job of stimulating the senses in such a way that we can extract what we call a "musical experience." Records and tapes are a good example. The analog experience is pretty reliably "musical" regardless if your playback equipment is cheap consumer technology, or some "high end" iteration.

Digital, more specifically, the CD is not like that. Seems like we are always in search of the "holy grail" of playback equipment to make "music." It's a form of alchemy.

But all is not lost, for the answer is not yet another "magical" DAC, but simply to go to a higher resolution format, which is what is happening.

Thanks for letting me share my opinion. I do understand that many out there disagree and that's okay with me. I do think old dude Neil Young is right, curmudgeon that he is.
