Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

LH Labs PUlse fi + OliveOne

Realized this was all Crowdfunded for digi source:

OliveOne w/1Tb
Homebrew BNC terminated coax SPDIF w/adapters to RCA as transport
LH Labs Pulse fi + LPS

(And a Sonos Connect feeding the TOSLINK input)

Have to say that the LH Labs is giving the Berkeley Audio a run for its money - considering the MSRP of the set is less than half the MSRP of the Berkeley, this is cool. Haven't tried the USB input yet on Pulse. Don't have USB converter box for Berkeley.

With high resolution files, 24/176-192k the advantage in the LH Labs
At 24/96 they are pretty close - the LH Labs is a little warmer/fuller and the Berkeley is a little cooler and tighter (only by degrees here). With CD quality (streamed FLAC 16/44.1) the LH Labs sounds better and trantients are sharper and sounds better. With streamed compressed (192-320kbps) sources, the LH Labs sounds better.

Impressions so far:

While I hate the term "analog like" for a number of reasons, I will say the LH Labs presents fullness and musical density close to our turntable and SACD player even with lower resolution sources.

You really start to understand the incredible resolution of 24/192 as a digital native vs ripped from an analog master tape, but what was really impressive was the way that it somehow wrested decent performance from even compressed streams.

Niggles:

The OliveOne has a <1 sec dropout every so often (like every 20-45 minutes) after latest software update. It is not there using Sonos so thinking that OliveOne needs to figure this little baby out, but does great otherwise as a transport.
