I have never brought home a DAC or player over $1k. Does that mean mid-fi? The Gungnir was one of the most expensive that I have heard in my system and I have heard those in several other systems too.
At T. H. E. show, I listened to many, briefly, and did not like most. I could generally identify the few NOS DACs. I got to hear a Lampizator also and was not impressed compared to my Octave. Of course the systems there were varied and used many speakers which I did not like, etc., and I don't claim that to be comparable to hearing those DACs in my system.
As I recall, a Resonessence DAC and a McIntosh player stood out to me as being great.
