RE: PS Audio DirectStream DAC - an extremely interesting video.

While I doubt that upconverting PCM to DSD will ever become a dominant practice, a closely related form of such upconversion has been DAC chip industry practice for many years. DSD is a specific implementation of 1-bit quantized sigma-delta-modulation (SDM, for short), featuring very high order noise shaping. Essentially, all DAC chips today are already SDM based. However, most of them utillize a course multi-bit quantizer (typically, 5 or 6 bits) based form of SDM, along with lower order noise shaping than is utilized by DSD. Full native resolution, purely linear PCM quantizer based current production DAC chips are, to my knowledge, non-existent. Most production audio DAC chips today are a hybrid, marrying SDM to multi-bit quantization. However, I believe that the ESS Sabre chips may instead utilize a massively parallel array of 1-bit quantizers, but I'm uncertain about that.
