So here's the problem. I think.
My particular SSD is a 3-year 240GB OCZ SATA III drive.
My external passive (no AC) drive case is a USB 3.0 capability. It does not specify 2.0.
The disk activity light in the ext. case was obnoxiously bright. So I disabled it thinking that might free up just enough USB voltage that could now be used by the SSD. This actually made matters worse.
I then tried a USB 2.0 cloning cable and that seems to work well.
I also tried a 10-year old 5.25" 200GB external HDD active (requires AC) and that too works well.
So my guess is the problem with using the OPPO's USB 2.0 ports and external USB drives has more to do with the use of USB 3.0 at the external case.
Anyway, thanks everybody for your suggestions.
