I think it depends to a large extent on how good your CD and SACD player is. Back when I had an Oppo BDP-83SE (plays CDs and SACDs) and a Raysonic 128 (plays CD only), the Raysonic routinely beat the Oppo when playing the same SACD. Of course, the Raysonic was playing the CD layer of the SACD. And when playing the same CD, same result.
I got an Oppo 105 because it at least equalled the Raysonic and then sent it to ModWright for their tubed modifications. When the modded Oppo outperformed the Raysonic, I sold the Ray.
Still, my best-sounding CDs equal or beat the average SACD in my system, which is detailed in Inmate Systems.
