OPPO 105 - need to format SSD - but which format?

Been thoroughly enjoying the performance of the OPPO 105D for music only.

Using the USB thumb drive has improved performance signficantly while using my iPad mini as a music server controller makes for a pleasant user interface.

I'd like to now advance to an SSD for my music but I'm unsure how the SSD should be formatted. I've already tried mac OS extended - journaled and copied about 10GB of music onto that SSD to try. The OPPO recognizes the SSD device but shows zero objects on the drive.

My primary computer is my macbook pro 2014. I tried formatting the SSD's partition to Windows NTFS but then using my mac, I couldn't copy music to the SSD on my mac treating the SSD as though it were locked.

Any suggestions on how or what to format the SSD to, so that the music is readable by the OPPO and so I can also use my mac to freely move music on and off the SSD?

Any suggestions are much appreciated,
