A good speaker design properly amplified in a well treated room will sound more natural and dynamic than an active speaker with built in DSP, IMO.
The key is how the setup sounds in the long term, not just a short demo, and I can't help but think that a speaker with built in digital and amplifier gives up any advantge in DSP with problems due to vibration, jitter, digital amplifiers, etc.
Still, you have to work hard to find speakers and amplifiers that work together well. And getting D/A conversion right is expensive, no matter where it occurs.
Not to mention, DSP is no substitute for room treatment.
I can't help but think these systems are cost saving for the companies, but the result is not necessarily better sound.
I have liked the LInn sound in the past, but I haven't heard anything they've done since about 2004.
