By scrubbing off the labels, engineers might guess, but would have to spend more effort to work it out exactly if they wanted to use the exact same devices.
True. But if Metrum goes out of business someday and your DAC dies, you have no idea what replacement part to use if it was a DAC chip with the part number rubbed off.
