A few weeks ago I decided to give PC audio a try.
So I ordered a DAC, in this case a PS Audio New wave which normally retails for around 1 k.
I installed JRiver and DB Power and recorded about 500 cd's
I received the DAC on the 23rd of Dec and let it run till yesterday
24/7. So this Saturday was the moment of thruth for me.
Right from the first track using the PC/DAC system I could hear an improvement, dynamics, bass was better and as I went along the
it became clear that the PC/DAC system was sounding better than my Sony 5400/VSE unit. I even feel now that the std RBCD on the PC/DAC system sound better than my SACD's on the Sony. In a way it is good news, as the Sony is getting on to 5 years old and the life span of cd players from my experience is not much more than 7 or 8 years old
I may still use the Sony for SACD's but what is the point is the RBCD layer sounds better.
So technology did move on, and remember this is a mid price DAC
I paid just over 600$ for it, sure I had to buy a 4 TRB hard drive
and a cheap laptop to get the system going.
And I must still try the more expansive cables I own on the DAC to Amp
section at the moment I use a cheapish Atlas cable, compared to the top of the range Acrolink on the Sony.
Interesting time for sure. I wonder how much better would a top of the range DAC would be?? I will try one at some stage.
