You need to consider that not only will the mechanics wear but that the laser will decline in output power to the point where ultimately it won't read discs. Laser assemblies are often no longer available for elderly transports.
I would check out the availability of spares for a given old transport before shelling out a kilodollar.
I don't know how you can verify the provenance of a statement of low use made by a vendor.
