Had the same issue with a Marantz CD player years ago and did the same thing to fix the problem. Regarding lubricating the rails, I used a very low viscosity oil. Watchmaker's oil has been recommended in the past. You want to avoid a grease that may eventually harden and not let the laser mechanism move freely on the rail.
