He did more than talk. Thanks to work by him, Thomas Lund, George Massenberg, Bob Katz, Doug Sax, and many others, the volume normalization algorithms on almost all cloud services and iTunes make severely compressed recordings sound weak, puny, distant, and generally lousy. As the over-compression was done to make music stand out on the radio (and when streaming/downloaded) implementing the various normalization standards has removed that impetus.
Still, music mastered for playback on ipods with earbuds will target less dynamic range than CD, SACD, or downloadable wav or flac files, which is probably how it should be.
