Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

At a Loss For Words

I will now use a lot of words to explain why I am at a loss. I have several dacs in my system. For redbook playback I use an Audio Note CDT/Two transport with a Audio Note Dac IIb. This is my reference dac. For Hi Rez playback I use a Mytek 192 stereo DSD dac. Not as musical as the AN but nice and for my headphones I use the Schiit Loki dac. Last week out of curiosity I bought a DIY dac from a gentleman on Audiogon. Being a fan because of my audio note on Non Oversampling dacs without filters this dac interested me. It uses 8 parallel Phillips TDA 1543 dacs. No over sampling, no digital filters and no analog filters. In a nice case with a hefty outboard power supply. All he wanted was $85. I really wanted to see what all the hype is about these old Phillips dacs. I have had it for 3 days now and I can't stop listening to it. Much more musical than the Mytek or Loki and running neck and neck with my $8000 Audio Note setup. What is going on here? Heard today at our audio club meeting the new PS Audio Direct Stream dac. Very detailed, high resolution and a little on the dry side but did not hear it in my system. For now this cheap dac is a keeper for me but would like any feedback from those of you who have heard this old phillps chips
