Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

I find that some of the arguments presented in this thread - inane. Each time a point is made regarding engineering/technology the response is how much something cost.

Granted - quite often the higher price product may yield better sonics, but there is no guarantee that the price tag will yield quality sound. As I read through this thread, I kept thinking what derision would be heaped upon the Audio Note DAC offering if it were priced at only $500. No matter the composition of the internals of the DAC, it would be maligned based on cost alone.

Inmates, all too often, spend more time discussing the price of an item rather than listening to music. A string quartet, to some, could not be as enjoyable as a symphony orchestra; merely, because the trio does not cost as much. The emotional content of the music is what counts for most of us, but then there are the ones that only hear the music based on the cost. Or could it be they only hear cost?

To use the automobile analogy: if the task is to go from point A to point B then a Toyota Tercel will do the job just as well as a Maybach. Conversely, if the task is to traverse that span in the lap of luxury, then the Maybach would be the choice.

Regardless the cost, a multi-million dollar formula-1 racer would be hard -pressed to traverse New York City from the Bowery to Harlem on any given day as well as a Ford Taxi. Despite the cost, the racer would probably be stranded if not broken by the city streets. The racer is just designed for another purpose.

The task in engineering dictates the solution. Cost - may be an overriding factor in bounding the solution, but the solution, is ultimately determined by the task/problem. On the other hand, if the task is to spend the most money - then the problem doesn't matter.

There is plenty of high dollar equipment that produces excellent sound. For the aspiring musician that has to hear certain aspects of a composition, then an Ipod may do. The task determines the required equipment - not the cost.

It appears to me that a certain amount of ego is wrapt in the cost of equipment. Damn the task. The cost is the golden idol. A great number of inmates listen to music. They get joy from what they hear whatever the cost.

When one's ego gets tied into the equipment; then any number of parameters will suffice for deriding a piece of equipment. There are specs, cost, material, design, etc. Pick your poison.
