My FIRST CD player, the FD1000 made by Philips but sold in the US as a Magnevox, featured 4x oversampling. That works out to 176.4 and allowed the use of gentle slope analogue filters instead of brick wall digital. This reduced phase shift and some other 'digital filter artifacts'.
And even though this is a PRE TD1541 chipset of ONLY 14 bit, the sound was terrific for its day.
Don't forget, we're talkin' 1983 here!
Todays Digital filters are VERY complex. Please look up the filter selection on the Cambridge Audio DacMagic + which has a choice of 3 (switchable) filters.
This is JUST my opinion, but I think there may be an unfortunate reaction between CD digital filters and most 'd' amps. The Zobel used in 'd' amps has a phase shift in the audio passband which when added to the additional phase shift of the digital filters results in some decrease in audio information and realism.
Too much is never enough
